Mt. Nanjiabawa

Mt. Nanjiabawa is the highest mountain in Nyingchi Area of Tibet. The highest peak of the mountain has an altitude of 7782 meters and is listed as the 15th highest mountain in the world. The huge triangle shaped main peak is covered with snow all year round.

The mountain has three main ranges: Northwest range, Northeast range, and South range. The Northeasr range stretches about 30km till the bank of Brahmaputra River. And on that range there are six peaks higher than 6000 meters. Bedrocks on hillside expose to air and in the valleys there are glaciers.

Due to its latitude and altitude Mt. Nanjiabawa cross tropical zone and frigid zone. The mountain is less than 200km from  Bcuoka Lake in Motuo County, but the altitude difference reaches 7000 meters. In this unique tropical mountainous area, amazingly rich plants and animals exist. Some biologists regard here as the natural museum of vegetation and the gene base of mountainous living resources.

In the south side of Mt. Nanjiaawa there are four types of climate. The stream valley below 1100 meters belongs to lower mountain tropical forests. In the wet and hot forests there are many ropy vines and epiphytes. From 1100 meters to 2400 meters it is mountainous subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest belt. From 2400 meters to 2800 meters it is mainly temperate zone coniferous forest belt. The area in the altitude of 2800 meters to 4000 meters are frigid coniferous forest belt. And the area 4000 – 4700 meters are frigid bush and meadow. Above 4700 meters there are the forever ice and snow belt.

The north side of Mt. Nanjiabawa receives much less rainfall and the altitude of ground face is higher. So the biological diversity on the north side is quite simple.

In 2005 Mt. Nanjiabawa was evaluated as the top beautiful mountain in China by Chinese National Geographic magazine.
